Heavy Metal Speciation Study of Sediments in Hussainsagar Lake, Greater Hyderabad, India

چکیده
Hussainsagar lake in the heart of Hyderabad city receives domestic sewage and industrial effluents through five streams draining the catchment area of 245 sq. km around the lake. Lake used to receive untreated industrial effluents through streams during 1970 -1990. Over the years, sediments in the lake have adsorbed the heavy metals and have reported elevated concentrations. Metal speciation of five heavy metals viz. nickel, chromium, lead, cadmium and Aluminum have been carried out to determine the exchangeable, bound to carbonates, bound to Fe-Mn oxides, bound to organic matter and sulphides and residual fractions. The exchangeable, bound to carbonate and bound to Fe-Mn oxides decides the metal mobilization and bioavailability in the aquatic environment. The results of study indicate the risk to the aquatic environment in the Hussainsagar lake. The speciation data can used to take decisions as regards dredging of the lake bed sediments based on the percentage of first three fractions with respect to the total concentration.

Risk assessment and mitigation measures on the heavy metal polluted water and sediment of the Kolleru Lake in Andhra Pradesh, India
The Kolleru Lake is a famous Ramsar wetland of international significance. In this study heavy metal contents in water and sediment samples are reported. It is found that certain potentially toxic metal ions like chromium (4.5-80 µg/L), copper (1-20 µg/L), manganese (1-313 µg/L) and zinc (1.2-57 µg/L) are present in variable quantities in the lake water. When normalized with respect to concentr...

متن کاملAssessment of water quality in Hussainsagar lake and its inlet channels using multivariate statistical techniques
Application of different multivariate statistical approaches for the interpretation of data obtained during a monitoring programme of Hussainsagar Lake and its catchment area at Hyderabad (India) is presented in this study. The waste water coming from the catchment is being directly discharged in to the lake, forming point and non point sources of contamination of lake water. This study analyze...
متن کاملLake Hydro Geochemistry: An Implication to Chemical Weathering, Ion-exchange Phenomena and Metal Interaction
Present study aims to unravel the hydro geochemical interaction of sediment and water of Saheb bandh lake, West Bengal, India with an emphasis on heavy metal assessment. Lake water belongs to Ca2+–HCO3− type hydro geochemical faces and water-rock interaction primarily controls the lake water chemistry. Based on different Hydro chemical characteristics it is suggested that silicate weathering is...
